if the devil made his home in Africa it would be in Gitarama prison. this living hell sees 7,000 men piled up in a tiny space originaly built to merely house 400. it’s numbers soared following the Rwandan genocide. conditions are beyond cramped, as four prisoners are squashed in to every single square yard of this huge brick box. guards are pretty much absent as inmates die on their feet from malnutrition, some even using decomposing flesh to top up their meagre diet. there is no better place on earth to see death in its final living form.
