famous for all the wrong reasons, Carandiru is the most notorious prison in Brazil. for a country beset by organised crime and cocaine trafficking that’s quite some achievement. over the years this South American hell hole has seen some 1,300 inmates die in only slightly less than suspicious circumstances. riots, AIDS epidemics and guards who were prepared to go all the way to butchery to make a point, alerted Amnesty International to the problems here. as a result the charitable organisation campaigned for its closure, meeting success in 2002.
